چکیده
There is an error in the first sentence of the " Cellular uptake studies " subsection of the Materials and Methods. The correct sentence is: To avoid aggregation/agglomeration of the nanoparticulate iron, the medium for cellular uptake consisted of a balanced salt solution open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited.

Caco-2 Cell Acquisition of Dietary Iron(III) Invokes a Nanoparticulate Endocytic Pathway
Dietary non-heme iron contains ferrous [Fe(II)] and ferric [Fe(III)] iron fractions and the latter should hydrolyze, forming Fe(III) oxo-hydroxide particles, on passing from the acidic stomach to less acidic duodenum. Using conditions to mimic the in vivo hydrolytic environment we confirmed the formation of nanodisperse fine ferrihydrite-like particles. Synthetic analogues of these (~ 10 nm hyd...
متن کاملA Nanoparticulate Ferritin-Core Mimetic Is Well Taken Up by HuTu 80 Duodenal Cells and Its Absorption in Mice Is Regulated by Body Iron12
BACKGROUND Iron (Fe) deficiency anemia remains the largest nutritional deficiency disorder worldwide. How the gut acquires iron from nano Fe(III), especially at the apical surface, is incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE We developed a novel Fe supplement consisting of nanoparticulate tartrate-modified Fe(III) poly oxo-hydroxide [here termed nano Fe(III)], which mimics the Fe oxide core of ferr...
متن کاملA fluorescent metal-sensor study provides evidence for iron transport by transcytosis in the intestinal epithelial cells
Iron transport across the intestinal epithelium is facilitated by the divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) on the brush border membrane (BBM). The fluorescent metal sensor calcein, which is hydrophilic, membrane-impermeable and quenched by chelation with iron, was used to test our hypothesis that intestinal iron absorption is through the endocytic processes and is involved in a pathway where BBM...
متن کاملEndocytic pathway of exogenous iron-loaded ferritin in intestinal epithelial (Caco-2) cells.
Ferritin, a food constituent of animal and vegetal origin, is a source of dietary iron. Its hollow central cavity has the capacity to store up to 4,500 atoms of iron, so its potential as an iron donor is advantageous to heme iron, present in animal meats and inorganic iron of mineral or vegetal origin. In intestinal cells, ferritin internalization by endocytosis results in the release of its ir...
متن کاملEvaluation of Iron Bioavailability in Caco-2 cell Culture Model: Modification of the Original Method
Background and Objectives: In the original in vitro method for evaluation of iron bioavailability using caco-2 cell model, ferritin formation by cells is considered as a functional indicator of both absorption and utilization of iron. However, as iron is measured in the tested material and then ferritin concentration is measured in caco-2 cell lysate, it is almost impossible to have a concrete ...
